Editorial column

There are different surfaces surround us. They all have different names and they give an opportunity to do a lot to do with itself, apparently, demanding nothing in return. We all ourselves are surfaces too: we erase something from our memory, and some facts remain with us forever, as traces of time on stones… In the sixteenth time composing, drawing and modeling the next surface of the Experimental environment, we ‘ve tried to interfere into a dialogue with it, to open mysterious levels, to foresee stratifications.
It has appeared that to see all space and its landscapes, it is necessary both to rise up, and dramatically to fall into the depth of own thoughts and feelings, often losing the feeling of place and time. And only then, through efforts, there are the view points and visual angles, which unite different subject lines,  to  be seen. Reading the magazine, examining its surfaces and entering spaces, you, of course, lay your own route,  find other reference points which will be the base for new stories...

Your «terra incognita» and editor-in-chief
Irina Sokolova

The 16th issue is the last one. With this issue we complete the project of the student's magazine „Experiment”, anyway in the form it has been known for last eight years.
We thank all, who took part in the realization of this project — designers, editors, correspondents, artists, illustrators, and many, many other people, who implemented the idea of the magazine into life.
We want to express a very special gratitude to the administration of the university and personally to Dmitriy Arsenjev and Vladimir Ivanov who always supported us and gave us an opportunity to create the arbitrary design we dared ourselves on the "Experiment" pages.

Later we are going to ...
... but, it is already another story ...

An interview with the deans of the university

Aleksandra Solovieva

Here are interviews with the deans of two big faculties at the Polytechnic University: Humanities and Foreign Languages. The deans discuss the contemporary state of affairs at the faculties and the future prospects for education development.

45 years — doing great! (to the anniversary of Preparatory Faculty for foreign students at Polytechnical University)

E. Nikitina, M. Sorokina

This article is devoted to the description of the role and place of a preparatory faculty for foreign students at Polytechnic University in Saint-Petersburg's education system. The Preparatory Faculty, which exists because of the work of the IMOP, is an important part of the process of implementing international cooperation programs in education.

About nothing: Abandoned

Text and interview: Nikolay Liybich
Photo: Michael Makshanov, Olga Messer, Margarita Uspenskaya, Nikolay Liybich, Igor Yakovlev

This article is devoted to understanding the resignifcation of abandoned buildings and godforsaken spaces. There are two parts. First, the experience of a necrourban photographer, and second, an interview with the participants of the “New Art Division” project.

Acheology of misterious sciences: Codex Seraphinianus

Text: Irina Sokolova, Julia Dzubina

By the end of the 70’s, Italian architect and industrial designer Luigi Serafini had published his book, which ideologically changed all existing schemes of relations between words and things. Furthermore, it offered a brand new view on the organization of the world and human mind. The book “Codex Seraphinianus” represents itself as the mysterious visual encyclopedia, containing a variety of surrealistic plots and comments toward these plots.

Internal idiots: arrangement

Photo: Masha Danzis, project “Arrangement”

Here is the interview with the young artists who work in Germany. They have released all the possible artistic potential of their art as well as they have pushed their art behind geographical borders, because creativity has no limints.

China: studying surfaces

Text: Maksim Ksenofotov
Photo: Katya Murysina

This article shares one particular viewpoint on contemporary Chinese culture. Through the use of his real-life experiences with this foreign culture, the author shares his ideas on the Celestial Empire.

Interaction of similarity

Text: Irina Sokolova

Here are responses and visual materials to the interaction between urban and natural environments. The materials were gathered by the second-year students of the “Design” department during their summer training.

Advanced space: LOFT

Text and photo: Ksenia Zhavoronok

This article is devoted to the analysis of a prominent phenomenon in contemporary urban and art culture, which is called “loft”. In Russia, as well as in the West, a special attitude toward such spaces has been formed. These spaces have inherent energetic and human-like qualities.

Try to Feel: Sumi-E

Text: Andrew Nikitin

The traditional Japanese ink painting technique, called Sumi-E, represents itself not only in the form of a special artistic practice, but also by its aesthetic, yet philosophical conception of the world with a basis in Ugen. Ugen represents a fascination for understatement, and a strive for continuous movement toward perfection.

Tale about the in/visible palace of Konstantin

Text: Natalya Martusevich, Dariya Lepik

This article is devoted to the creation and intricate existence of Strelna, along with it’s main gem — the Constantine Palace.

Artistic equation with one known: 33+1

Text: Juliana Rachinskaya, K. Orehov
Photo: Juliya Avgustinovich

This article tells us about the work done by the Studio of Monumental Art “33+1”, which has been inspired by Pavel Shugurov. Shugurov is not only the author of a magnificent conception of art mythology, but an artist, who has realized the idea of revising the role and place of monumental art in the space of a contemporary city.

Ponies running around

Text: Oleg Ovsov
Photo: Irina Mikhailova

Here is a short note regarding a visit to a freak-oddball party called “Loshadka”. You are unable to realize how freaky you actually are until you have experienced the freak atmosphere yourself.

WANTED: couch with adventures

Text: Katerina Gavrilo

The author speaks about her unforgettable “couch-surfing” experience, which allowed her to travel in a brand new way. The idea of this project is clear: to find a couch in the city that you wish to visit, or offer such a place on your own couch, offering another person the opportunity to see the inner-workings of a particular lifestyle/city from an entirely different perspective.

“Golden Autumn”: myth about the eternal return

Text: Editorial Team

This article reflects the main events of the “Golden Autumn XV” festival, that took place at the State Polytechnical University in the autumn of 2010, and tells us about the impression that was left on the author and the public by the show.
